Each pupil will receive an exercise book (blue for French and red for German) which we recommend they cover.  Classwork, grammar and homework should be recorded at the front, with vocabulary at the back. All work to be set out neatly, with a date and title, and then ruled off at the end. Written homework should be titled ‘Devoirs’ in French and ‘Hausaufgaben’ in German. GCSE revision guides for both languages at higher and foundation level are now available to purchase from the languages department at a discounted price of £3.50 (RRP £4.50).

These are supplied within the department for use in class, but pupils are also encouraged to provide their own pocket dictionary for school and home use. It is important to note that pupils must provide their own dictionaries for use in the GCSE controlled assessments. Publishers include the Collins Pocket Editions and Oxford Pocket Dictionaries, which retail for around £3 – £6.

We expect all pupils to spend approximately one hour per week on homework throughout the year. There will be two pieces of homework each week. One will cover any of the four listening, speaking, reading and writing language skills or will be research based. The other will involve vocabulary learning. We advise that vocabulary should be learned in small chunks and spread out over a few days. Support from parents with learning vocabulary is much appreciated.
