We live in a world of rapidly changing technology. Much of this technology has enormous benefits to the young people in our care, both educationally and socially. It is a fact of modern life that a large number of young people have Facebook accounts and the majority of these are used responsibly. However, occasionally social networking sites can be used innappropriately and it is for this reason that we would like to offer the following advice to parents:
- Discourage your child from posting personal details such as their age, mobile number or e-mail address on their homepage.
- Discourage your child from accepting as ‘friends’ anyone that they do not already know.
- Encourage your child to report any suspicious requests from other Facebook users by clicking’Report/Block this person’ and ticking the appropriate box.
Clearly we respect your right as a parent to decide what is best for your child but hopefully the advice we have given will help you to keep your child safer online.
